My Content Pedagogy

Depth and Complexity

I correlate Depth and Complexity questions in my classroom on a regular basis through History and Literature. I created a BINGO chart students would use to answer questions as a group and individually throughout the year to push comprehension and depth of knowledge . They would discuss questions and present their findings. Students are also required to do an Independent Book Project where they complete projects based off depth and complexity based projects as they are reading through their book. Students use dialectical journaling to gain higher level comprehension over parts of the book they find interesting or question to push students to analyze literature at a higher level. Students also learned about the American Revolution and Texas Revolution through Blended learning and Depth and Complexity questions. They would work with a partner and peer coach through the questions and videos while taking Cornell notes.

ELEMENTS OF STEM

I design real world applicable PBL's that push my students to apply content to their products. They collaborate with their groups to form driving questions and to answer their Need to Knows. I integrate my ELA PBL's with Science and Technology Content. Below are a few examples of some past PBL's that do just that.

Novel Studies using Cross Curricualr Content and Interative Digital Journaling

This year I increased my use of novels to teach students content. I found many resources to help me do this in a digital interactive way. With teaching remote students and in class students, I found using interactive Journal slides was a great way to get students to dig deeper and spiral content knowledge. I also used several of these novels to teach Social Studes using Historical Fiction and project based learning. Below are a few exampels:

"Refugee" by Alan Gratz: Refugee Hyperdoc

"Fever of  1793"   Literary Elements, BrochureLearn, Prepare, Live PBL Entry Doc , Free African Society

"I am Malala"  Readers Notebook

"Tuck Everlasting ":  Response Journaling

"Seer of Shadows": Interactive Slides

"My Brother Sam is Dead"   Interactive Novel Slides

WALKTHROUGHS

2021-2021  Director Walkthrough

Director Walkthrough 9/16/22

This observation shows how I give students responsibility over their own data. They analyzed their Map data and tracked it on a data tracker. I give students a chance to take charge of their own learning through Student Workshops, personalized learning and student reflection.

  • After reviewing BOY data, students where given Design Time - for PBL project.  Mrs. Woods visited with each group to ensure they were on the right track and provided guidance if needed.
  • Accomplished-Use of digital or paper student reflection tools (reflection sheets, notebooks, journals, self-assessment manipulatives) and gives students the opportunity to articulate their strengths or weaknesses are and what actions they are taking to address these.
  • Students completed grammar spiral and then shared answers with the entire class.  The rest of the time, students reviewed their BOY data, made plans, finished poetry poem and All About Me project.

Fall 2021 Performance Rubric

I recieved Accomplished and Proficient in my Performance Rubic over Domain 1, Domain 2, Domain 3 and Domian 4.

Some of the notes taken are listed below that shows my use of  Content Knowledge in not on PBL but also over the Unit.

  • Students shared K/N2K’s with the class - Mrs. Woods facilitated the collection of K/N2K’s to ensure students included the most important features/aspects of the PBL / There is definitely no downtime during class. Mrs. Woods maximizes every minute of class time. Use of a timer to get everyone on track and moving
  • Students moved to station groups to work on/finish non-fiction stations - online programs, games, activity cards, small group with Mrs. Woods / Mrs. Woods checked in with each group

Director Walk through- Jan 2022

Review of MAPS data - students added their results to their data folders, charted progress, and set goals. After reviewing data, students were instructed to move into literature circles. Students knew exactly what to do - they were either reading their books, answering questions, or completing discussion posts.

2022- Spring Performance Appraisil

I recieved Accomplished on the majority of my performance and section Proficent. This aprasial shows my ability to be able to connect real world application in the classroom through meaningful engaging content.

Below is comment  that shows my ability to do so:

"The current PBL over digital citizenship is a perfect example of the real-world connections Mrs. Woods strives to bring to her students. What her students are learning will not only help them, but when they present to another grade level, they will be helping those students learn about technology safety. "

Focus of Observation: Classroom Environment

High Student Level Engement:

A classroom management system has been designed, implemented, and adjusted with student input and is appropriate for the classroom and individual student needs. Students are actively encouraged to take responsibility for their behavior. The teacher uses research-based strategies to lessen disruptive positive behaviors.

I have created a PBLs that is aligned to Science and ELA TEKS. Students worked in groups and with in each group we implemented content specific roles that helped hold accountability and make the connection to real world application. As a whole group students discussed questions that need to be asked to help them carry out their roles/jobs.

Technology Independent Study/ Digital Citizenship PBL

Mrs. Burke-Hicks and I were assigned an Independent Study class that focused on us finding a technology issue with in our school. We choose to address the level of implementation of technology TEKS in the classroom. We decided to create a PBL that focused on teaching the 9 themes of digital citizenship combining Elements of Design in Art, ELA expository compositions, persuasive techniques and nonfiction text structures and features.  Students were assigned one of the 9 themes of digital citizenship and in charge of designing a digital presentation to teach that theme to the 3rd and 4th grade. They also had to create a poster to create awareness as well as an engaging activity to assess the younger students knowledge over the theme that was taught.
