STEM/Project Based Learning
2021-2022 Students learned through a nonfiction lens how to "Eat Their Biggest Frogs" this was a PBL that is real world application and tasks they struggle with on a daily basis. This book helps them learn about time management and how to not procrastinate.  Caldwell ZOO PBL I used this PBL as a way to review some nonfiction TEKS that some students seemed to struggle with. I also was able to incorporate Argumentative Text in it as well by having student implement rhetorical devices and logical fallacies through their advertisments and essays. This PBL was a fantastic way to keep students engaged and learning through Cross Curriclar lens of Social Studies, Science and ELA. Students had a blast researching their animals, plants and landorms. They were able to apply their reserach knowledge into a creation of an exhibit. They build a model, research slides and an advertisment showing why their exhibit was the best addition to the Caldwell Zoo.  FEVER 1796  PBL : Learn, Prepare, Live In this PBL students read the novel Fever 1793 while analzying the elements of fiction students studies the historical facts it was based out of. Philidelphia during the Yellow Fever epidemic was one in which they correlated to the current epedimic of COVID-19. They made connections from the past to present day all the while examing the differences and seeing how our new day an age is better prepared during our current epedimic with protocols set in place. Artifact:  World Tour PBL Students created a virtual field trip through Google Sites or other avenues to show the differenences of between scocieties, culture , religion, geographic features as well as location of different world counties. Students used research based information and gathered sources to create their virtual field trip.  Wonder.... STEM PBL ECLIPSE PBL 2017 |
 |
We started of the school year with an amazing phenomena that provided a great opportunity for a Launch. This project entwined Science, Engineering and Technology concepts when students had to create a model and a digital presentation over the process of an eclipse and explain it through figurative language to a younger audience.Â

ZOO EXHIBIT PBL
In this PBL students incorporated many STEM Concepts. They focused on creating electronic presentations that incorporated biology, geology, geography and  history. Students demonstrated knowledge of what it takes to put an actual zoo exhibit together.  They were divided into four roles (climatologist, zoologist, botanist and geologist) in which each job is needed the other to complete their part in the PBL.Â

This walkthrough shows my ability to enage students at a high academic level through 21st century skills.Â
It mentions several peices of evidence which are quoted below:
Provide examples of content language and vocabulary evidence: "The academic language of the class as a whole is high. Students and Mrs. Woods are using the academic language in every sentence. WOW! Such high academic content language."
observed 21st Century Competencies - "This workshop requires all students to use all 21st Century skills to work towards the same goal."

PBL Practice and implementation
Mrs Woods is truly committed to the PBL model and Personalized Learning. Â Her strong understanding of PBL allows her to create and implement curricular PBL's.
Today, she launched The US Tour PBL and facilitated the Know/Need to Know Process.

I have found that implementing Content Specific Roles in the classroom not only help hold accountability for group members, but also introduces real science oriented Careers helping prepare them for 21st Century Skills.Â

4th grade TIMESHARE GROUP ROLES.docx
I also help the students break apart these roles to further their understanding of the 21st Century Skills to begin the research process using DOK levels.Â
Here are some examples of the questions we created as a class to help them begin the research and hold accountability for each role.

Increasing Masters on STAAR
In 2018/2019 year I had the 5th graders take the Reading STAAR test my 90/60 30 was Approaching 96 , Meets- 88, Masters-56 with the mastery level being at 56%. Then Covid happened and we skipped a year of STAAR testing. I then had that group again as 7th graders taking the 7th grade Reading STAAR, That year the 7th grade 90/60/30 was  Approaching- 100%, Meets- 96%, Master-92%. That groups mastery level increased from 56% to 92% being a 36% increase.Â
